The Birth of Newtown

The Brickfields, cheap and close to town, attracted thousands of unskilled workers after the discovery of gold. By the turn of the century, this area was multiracial and overcrowded. The authorities tried to create racially segregated areas in Burghersdorp and the 'Coolie Location'. The City Council used the outbreak of bubonic plague as the excuse to burn down the 'Coolie Location and to 'relocate its inhabitants to segregated locations. Milner replanned the area for industrial purposes and renamed it Newtown.
