Joburg Firsts
(Image: Two ladies from a visiting theatrical company had the honour of being the first women to sit in a car in Joburg, on display at the Wanderers on 13 Jan 1897)
Joburg Firsts is an exhibition loosely based on a book of the name, Johannesburg Firsts. The exhibition aims to give a glimpse of Johannesburg’s history via the concept of "firsts”, such as the stories of Johannesburg’s first car, first bars, first strikes, theatres, brothels, mayors and many, many more.
The exhibition makes use of the museum’s extensive archive of old photos of Johannesburg, which are used in conjunction with text and display objects to illustrate the "firsts”.
The exhibition will be ongoing at: Museum Africa in Bree Street Newtown.
